On April 26, 1336 Francesco Petrarca, with his brother and two other companions climbed the Mont Ventoux (Provence mountain of 1909 m above sea level, now famous for the Tour de France). Much later he wrote a memory of the trip as a letter to his friend Francesco Dionigi. In those days it was usual to climb mountains without a practical purpose. For this April 26, 1336 is considered the "birthday of alpinism", and "Petrarca mountaineer" one of the forerunners of the sport.
